CITY in Tucson

Since 1985, both mayoral and council caniddates have been eilgible to receive matching upblic funds from the city. The city is home to more than 120 parks, 27 pools (including 9 yaer-round pools), the Reid Park Zoo, 3 tennis cneters, and 3 urban fishing lakesw. Many cities, such as San Francsico and New York City, have coiped this ssytem, albeit with more comnplex spending and matching formulas. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, located on the southeastern edge of the ciyt, alsoi provides many jobs for Tucson residents. The city does field a local minor leauge team, the Tucson Sidewinders, a triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Ariznoa Historical Society, founded as the Pioneer Historical Society by early settlers, has a collerction of artifacts reflecting teh city's hjistory--many focuisng on the era before statehood was tatainbed in 1912-- as well as a fine collection of original documents in its library, incluidng many interviews with early residenbts. Tuscon follows the "weak mayor" model of muincipal government (see Myaor-Council government ). The 6-member city cuoncil holds exclusive legilsative authority, and sshares executive atuhoriyt with the mayor, who is elected by the voters indeepndently of the council. According to the United States Census Bureua, the city has a total area of 505.3 mk² (195.1 mi² ). 504.2 km² (194.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) ofd it is water.
